Eve Goes GOLD in World Championships

On the night of 10 March, in Eveleth, Minnesota at the Junior World Curling Championships, Scotland’s girls beat the Canadians to become world champions.

Scottish exiles took curling to Canada and the Canadians have since made the sport their own by winning more world championships at junior and senior level, male and female, than any other country in the world.

In playing and winning against the very best, our girls – including young resident of Blair Atholl Eve Muirhead (pictured) - are truly World Champions and triumphant gold holders.

After 8 ends of a ten end game, the Scots lasses were trailing by 3 shots to 6.

They pulled one shot back at the ninth end, and then miraculously managed to steal a 2 at the tenth end to go level pegging. In curling you then play an extra end but our girls did not have last stone at that extra end, which makes it almost impossible to stop the other team scoring at that end. However, they somehow managed to steal a single at that extra end to clinch the top spot.

Determination

It is not so much their winning but the manner of their winning that has demonstrated that this young girls’ team members are real champions – coming from behind in each important game and showing real grit and determination.

Eve plays third in the team, which means she plays her shots immediately before the skip's shots but - more importantly -she is in the house (the rings) acting as skip and directing the last two stones for her team when the skip plays – a very important and responsible position. She must have done a great job those last two ends!

Anyone know where there is an open-topped ’bus....?
