Seconds Tie for Honours at Brechin

Strathmore & Perthshire 2nd Division
Brechin CC vs Breadalbane CC at Guthrie Park, Brechin, Sunday 10 June

Every now and again this strange and wonderful game throws up the most unlikely and exciting result ..... the Tie. For this to happen both sides have to score exactly the same number of runs, with exactly the same number of wickets lost in their allocated number of overs.

The batting conditions were extremely difficult as Breadalbane was offered first use of the pitch. None of the Breadie batsmen really impressed but a stout rearguard action after early losses from Stone (13), Meyer, on debut (11)' and Myles Bax (27 no) eeked out 139 runs from 43 overs.

Brechin got away to a good start and, with 47 overs to score just 140 runs, it looked as if an early bath was required. Just as the Brechin upper and middle order batsmen got going, they got out, only one of them scoring in the twenties.

The Breadies began to sense there might be something in this for them. On a minefield of a pitch slow bowling was the order of the day, something The Breadies have in abundance. Emulating his performance of the previous day, Bowler took 2, Shearer took one in his first over and, coming back on for a second spel,l skipper Langhorn dislodged two more. Brechin appeared to allow the luxury overs in hand, and a low run target to mesmerise them.

Cue two more slowies, Powrie and veteran Stone came into the attack. Brechin could hardly hit the ball off the square, the overs were slipping by and wickets were falling.

Powrie had bowled well conceding just 9 runs from his 7 overs and taking 1 wicket but was tiring. Shearer came back on in the penultimate over, 4 runs where required for victory the last pair were at the wicket. First ball wide..Oh no ! then only 1 further run conceded from the over....brilliant!

Bowling miserly, Stone was on at the other end for the final over. Two runs or one wicket would decide it. Second ball, a single, and the scores were level. Then, third ball, a mis-timed cover drive lobbed the ball in the air, Joe Grace was there. Arms outstretched, he grabbed it cleanly, and both sides where all out for 139.

Incredible result, especially for Breadalbane, who had turned this match around from seeming oblivion. Stone finishing with 3 wickets from his six and a half overs, just 7 runs conceded.
