Second Match for Second XI
Strathmore & Perthshire League, Second Division
Sunday 27 May
The recent run of bad weather abated just long enough for Breadalbane Second XI to at last play only their second match of the season. The opposition were a strong Strathmore side, from Forfarshire.
The Breadies, under skipper Mark Langhorn, batted first and it was a case of 'the Eyes have it', as Kiwi opener Chris Eyes smashed 118. His ton (the club’s first centurion this season) accounted for more than 57% of the total runs scored - surely a club record ? Chris swotted 10 fours and 5 sixes in his share of the teams total of 206 for 9, in their 45 overs. |

Only Damon Shearer (23) and Kyle Hardy (28 not out) offered any meaningful support. Simpson, McDonald and Hewitson picked up 3 wickets apiece for the Forfar men, but thanks to Chris Eye's maiden century for the club, the target would be a difficult one.
After the tea break Strathmore began their run chase. Kyle Hardy had both the openers caught early on, but this bought M. McBeen (74) to the crease, and his 4th wicket partnership with A. McCormack (34) brought Strathmore to within touching distance of the finishing post.
However, spirited bowling, including first wickets of the season for Greg Powrie and 16 year old Joe Grace, as well as a flying catch from wicketkeeper Damon Shearer, ensured the men from Forfar had to wait until the 43rd over before victory was sealed.
Sorely needing match practice, the run out against Strathmore was always going to be a tough one for the Breadies. However, the match provided a chance for several players to grab their chance and find some form. This will surely bode well for the rest of the season.
