Dundee Dumps Breadies' Hopes

Strathmore & Perthshire Premier League
Saturday 19 May

Following the team’s excellent victory the previous week at Perth, Breadalbane travelled to League leaders Dundee High School Former Pupils, for their latest tussle, in the Strathmore Cricket Union Premier league.
However on a cold and windy afternoon, at the Dalnacraig Sports Ground, it was the former pupils who dished out the lesson in disciplined cricket.

Breadalbane batted first, with openers Glenn Douthwaite and Ollie Platts starting steadily. At 63 for no wicket at the beginning of the 20th over, the measured start looked like a good foundation from which to build a mountain of runs.

However within 2 overs the plan lay in tatters as the Breadies rocked at 69 for 4. First change bowlers Gray and Ali claiming 2 wickets each, as Douthwaite (2), Platts (1) , Mortimer (15) and Eyes (0) all headed back to the changing room.

The middle order now had the tricky task of trying to increase the scoring rate, whilst ensuring the Breadies at least used up their allotment of 45 overs. However against tight bowling only Kyle Hardy showed any real resistance, with 43 not out, as Breadalbane finished on 162 all out, with Andy Jacobs caught on the final ball of the innings. 39 extras bolstered the score, and helped cover the blushes of the Breadies middle order.

DHSFP, unbeaten so far this season, must have felt confident of passing this total. They started slowly, however, and the Breadies sensed a chink of light, when opener A.Gray was given out LBW to Darren Mortimer ( having survived two earlier similar appeals). Had Breadalbane not dropped the other opener K. Kyles (when on only 10) it might have been a different story. However the in form Kyles (79) and S. Perera (36) effectively won the match, with a second wicket stand of 62. Although spirited bowling and fielding from Breadalbane, with Kyle Hardy, Ollie Platts and Andy Jacobs all holding on to superb catches, the total was never enough to defend. Dundee passed the total with more than 10 overs to spare for the loss of 4 wickets.
