Breadies Sliced By Meigle in Premier Debut
Strathmore & Perthshire Premier League
Breadalbane vs Meigle
Played at Victoria Park Aberfeldy, Saturday 28 April
The candles burned late into the night as match analysts tried to understand how Breadalbane managed to lose their first-ever Strathmore & Perthshire Premier League match against such moderate opposition.
All Breadalbane’s top six batsmen were striking the ball well and got a start, but each time the ball became airborne it landed safely in the clutches of a Meigle fielder.
Only the newcomer, 18 year old Kyle Hardy, was able to make any headway against a very average Meigle attack, but even he was eventually bowled out for 39. The lowly 143 total posted by Breadalbane seemed unlikely to be enough. |

Just one of the many times that Mortimer beat the bat - but somehow the stumps also the ever-reliable Mortimer, Jacobs and Douthwaite, helped by inspired fielding, strangled the Meigle reply. Every run was precious to the Angus men as Breadalbane strained, in vain, to get wickets. The first wicket was a long time coming. Not until the 32nd over did Mortimer demolish the Meigle Pro’s stumps, the score by then had crept up to 107.
Giving very few chances away Meigle plodded on, scoring the winning run in the 41st of their allocated 45 overs, with only Dave Delph, the old maestro, managing to capture another wicket before the close.
Best bowling figures for the Breadies were returned by Darryn Mortimer conceding just 9 runs from his 9 overs for 1 wicket taken.
The Aberfeldy men can, however, take heart from the fact that they outplayed their opposition in just about every department. Nevertheless, the batters need to learn a simple lesson very quickly: in this league, you don’t hit the ball in the air to the fielders.
