Breadies Caught Mannofield Out

Strathmore & Perthshire Premier League
Breadalbane vs Mannofield, Saturday 9 June Victoria Park, Aberfeldy

Lying second in the league table, and harbouring title ambitions, Mannofield arrived from Aberdeenat a resplendent Victoria Park, in confident mood. The Aberdeen side won the toss and immediately invited the Highland Perthshire men to bat. Their confidence seemed vindicated when, after just 3 balls, Breadalbane opener Douthwaite headed back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers.

A passionate pre match harangue from coach/pro Mortimer seemingly hit a chord with the rest of the Breadie upper order, as the score wasthen relentlessly pushed along. Hardy (32), Eyes (56), Platts (23) and Mortimer himself (40)

steered Breadalbane to a respectable 217 for 7. Tea was a tense affair, 217 was defendable butfar from insurmountable. Breadalbane's tensions where relieved somewhat when, in his opening spell, Mortimer removed both the Mannofield openers.

This, however, brought the Aberdeen side's pro to the crease. Flailing right from the start Deep Patel was looking dangerous. The Breadies needed a serious change of tack.

Mark Bowler, the enigmatic Breadie skipper, fearlessly brought himself into the attack. His courage almost immediately paid off as Patel lofted one to long on only to be spilled. Soon after it came, a top edge - a skier, with debutant Jamie Coventry underneath it. The Breadies held their breath. Not textbook, but good enough and Patel was on his way for 4. Coventry was mobbed by his new found pals.

The heart was out of the Mannofield chase. Bowler bowled incredibly, it was as if they had never seen the like of it before for the Aberdeen side swished, missed and lobbed up catches all over the park. They were finally routed in the 29th over of their innings with their score on just 92.

Mark Bowler finished with a career best of 6 for 42. Mortimer chipped in with 3 for 14, and new boy Coventry added a second catch to his tally.
