Breadies Bounce Back Convincingly

Breadalbane CC vs Perthshire CCC
Strathmore & Perthshire Premier League
Saturday 5 May at the North Inch, Perth

After the disappointment of the previous week Breadalbane bounced back with a vengeance at the North Inch to record a stunning victory over County rivals Perthshire.
In the very first over, a brute of a delivery from Mortimer hit the unpredictable Perth pitch and struck the ‘Shire’s opening batsman in the face forcing him to retire. Fortunately the luckless Scott Barnsley did not suffer serious injury, his helmet thankfully taking most of the impact.

Andy Jacobs in the second over removed the other opener’s middle stump and Perthshire where in disarray. It could all have been over by tea but the Breadies squandered their excellent start by dropping a succession of five catches. It was, however, the safe hands of Ollie Platts that stopped the rot as he snaffled the Perthshire Pro. J. La Roux for 12.

The next five catches where all cleanly taken, in addition Mark Bridgeman chipped in with a couple of sharp stumpings. Perthshire where subsequently relegated to 164 for 9 from their 45 overs.
Young Turk Henry Philips bowled magnificently on debut for the Breadies taking 3 for 18, but it was hats off to the old stager, skipper Mark Bowler, who bamboozled the Perthmen with prodigious spin applying the coup de grace with his 3 for 14.

Batting was not going to be easy on the poor Perth track and so it proved as Myles Bax was removed for a duck in the fifth over with the score on just 1. Mortimer, however, was not going to be subdued by the devils in the pitch. He rode his luck initially, but went on to strike a masterful 66 before holing out with the score on exactly 100.
The Perthshire men must have been delighted to see the back of Mortimer, but their joy turned to despair as Laurence Bax, last season’s award-winning batsman, arrived at the crease. The young Bax carried on from where he left off last year by producing a delightful and chanceless 47 and, in the process, carrying the Breadies past the winning post.

Mention must also be made of Ollie Platts. The gritty Yorkshireman played a crucial support role to the other more flamboyant batsmen. Platts occupied the crease for all but three overs of the Breadalbane innings for his valuable 36 runs.
